Color Grading — Recreating a Film Look

Learning Objective

Recreate the color grade of a specific film scene as closely as possible.

This Week

One of the best ways to develop your color grading skills is to try to recreate the look of a film you admire. Choose a scene with a distinctive color grade — the teal-and-orange of a summer blockbuster, the desaturated grey of a thriller, the warm amber of a period drama — and try to recreate it on your own footage.

Daily Practice

Study the color grade of your chosen scene, frame by frame. Analyze the shadows, midtones, and highlights. What is the dominant hue? What is the saturation level? (45–60 min)

Weekly Challenge

Recreate the color grade of a specific film scene as closely as possible. Compare your version to the original and write a 200-word reflection on what you learned.
