The J-Cut and L-Cut

Learning Objective

Master the J-cut and L-cut as tools for seamless audio-visual transitions.

This Week

The J-cut and L-cut are among the most powerful and frequently used techniques in professional editing. In a J-cut, the audio from the next scene begins before the picture cuts to it, pulling the audience forward. In an L-cut, the audio from the previous scene continues over the first frames of the next scene, creating a sense of overlap and continuity.

Daily Practice

Take any two scenes you have previously edited and practice connecting them with J-cuts and L-cuts. Experiment with how much audio overlap feels natural. (30–45 min)

Weekly Challenge

Edit a 2-minute sequence of at least four scenes, using only J-cuts and L-cuts to connect them. The transitions should be completely invisible to a first-time viewer.
