Phase 1: The Foundation
Week 03 of 52 · Day 15–21
Continuity Editing
Learning Objective
Master the 180-degree rule, eyeline matching, and cutting on action.
This Week
Continuity editing is the invisible backbone of narrative filmmaking. Its purpose is to create a seamless, logical flow of space and time so that the audience never loses their bearings within the story world. The 180-degree rule establishes a consistent spatial relationship between characters. Eyeline matching ensures that when a character looks off-screen, the next cut shows what they are looking at.
Daily Practice
Edit a simple action — a person picking up a glass, walking through a door, or sitting down — from multiple angles. Focus on making the cut invisible. (30–45 min)
Weekly Challenge
Film or download a simple two-person conversation scene and edit it using strict continuity principles. No jump cuts, no crossing the line.
