Comedy Editing — The Rule of Three

Learning Objective

Practice the rule of three in comedic editing.

This Week

The rule of three is one of the most fundamental principles of comedy: establish a pattern in two shots, then break it in the third for the laugh. The first two shots set up the expectation; the third shot violates it. The editor's job is to find the perfect moment to deliver the third shot — not too early (the audience hasn't built the expectation yet) and not too late (the moment has passed).

Daily Practice

Practice the rule of three in short comedic sequences. Set up a pattern in two shots, then break it in the third. Experiment with the timing of the third shot. (45–60 min)

Weekly Challenge

Edit a 2-minute comedic scene. Focus entirely on timing — the placement of reaction shots, the length of pauses, and the precise moment of the punchline cut.
