Phase 1: The Foundation
Week 08 of 52 · Day 50–56
Rhythm — Editing to Music and Internal Beat
Learning Objective
Develop a sense of internal rhythm in your edits, independent of music.
This Week
Every scene has an internal rhythm determined by the pace of dialogue, the speed of action, and the emotional energy of the performances. Great editors feel this rhythm instinctively and cut in sync with it. This week, you will practice editing both with and without music to develop your internal sense of beat.
Daily Practice
Edit a 60-second sequence without any music. Then add music and observe how the music changes your sense of where the cuts should fall. Practice cutting to the beat, then against the beat deliberately. (30–45 min)
Weekly Challenge
Edit a 90-second music video for any song of your choice, using stock footage. Every cut must be motivated by the music — either on the beat, on a lyric, or on an emotional shift in the melody.
