Phase 2: Narrative Craft
Week 16 of 52 · Day 106–112
The Montage
Learning Objective
Master the art of the montage to compress time, convey information, and create emotional impact.
This Week
The montage is one of the most powerful tools in the editor's arsenal. Derived from the Soviet cinema theories of Eisenstein and Kuleshov, the montage works by juxtaposing images to create meaning that does not exist in any single image alone. In its most common contemporary form, the montage is used to compress time or to convey a complex emotional state through a rapid succession of images.
Daily Practice
Practice creating short montages (30–60 seconds) on different themes: the passage of time, the experience of grief, the joy of discovery. Focus on the rhythm and the emotional arc. (45–60 min)
Weekly Challenge
Create a 2-minute montage that tells a complete story — with a beginning, middle, and end — using only images and music, with no dialogue.
