Phase 3: Genre & Voice
Week 38 of 52 · Day 260–266
Horror Editing — Building Dread
Learning Objective
Learn to build and release tension through editing.
This Week
Horror editing is the art of manipulating the audience's nervous system. It requires a deep understanding of expectation and surprise — how to set up a pattern and then violate it at exactly the right moment. The best horror editors understand that the most terrifying moment is not the jump scare itself, but the moment just before it, when the audience knows something is coming but does not know when.
Daily Practice
Watch a horror film (Get Out, Hereditary, or The Shining) and analyze how the editor builds and releases tension. Take notes on the specific techniques used. (45–60 min)
Weekly Challenge
Watch a horror film and write a 300-word analysis of how it builds and releases tension. Focus on the specific editing techniques used.
