Documentary Editing — Structure

Learning Objective

Master the unique challenges of documentary editing.

This Week

Documentary editing is perhaps the most demanding form of editing because the editor must create a story from raw reality, without the benefit of a script or controlled performances. The documentary editor is, in a very real sense, the co-writer of the film. They must find the narrative thread within hours of interview footage, select the moments of genuine emotion and insight, and weave them together with b-roll.

Daily Practice

Watch a documentary film (Searching for Sugar Man, Amy, or 13th) and analyze how the editor constructs the narrative from interviews and archival footage. Take detailed notes. (45–60 min)

Weekly Challenge

Watch a documentary film and write a 300-word analysis of its editing structure. How does the editor create narrative from raw reality?
