Film Editing Mastery
Phase 2: Narrative Craft
Week 23 of 52 · Day 155–161

Narrative Short — Fine Cut

Learning Objective

Refine the pacing, shape the performances, and add J-cuts and L-cuts.

This Week

The fine cut is where the real editing work happens. You are now refining the assemble cut into something that feels like a film. Focus on pacing — is every scene the right length? Are there moments that drag? Are there moments that feel rushed? Shape the performances by selecting the best moments from each take. Add J-cuts and L-cuts to smooth the transitions between scenes.

Daily Practice

Work through the film scene by scene, refining each one. Apply everything you have learned in Phase 2. (45–60 min)

Weekly Challenge

Complete the fine cut of your 5-minute narrative short. The pacing should feel right, the performances should be shaped, and the transitions should be smooth.
