Phase 2: Narrative Craft
Week 19 of 52 · Day 127–133
Sound Design — Building a World
Learning Objective
Understand sound design as a storytelling tool and learn to build a basic sound world for a scene.
This Week
Sound design is the art of creating the sonic world of a film. It encompasses everything from the ambient sound of a location to the specific sound effects that punctuate the action to the subtle psychological sounds that create mood and atmosphere. Great sound design is invisible — it makes the world of the film feel real and alive without drawing attention to itself.
Daily Practice
Take a scene you have previously edited and strip out all the audio. Then rebuild the sound world from scratch using free sound effects from Freesound.org or Zapsplat. Focus on layering: room tone, background ambience, foreground sounds. (45–60 min)
Weekly Challenge
Create a 2-minute scene with no dialogue in which the story is told entirely through sound design and picture. The audience should understand what is happening through sound alone.
